What is Kundli matching?

Kundli matching (Guna Milan) compares the birth charts of two people before marriage. The traditional Ashtakoot system scores eight aspects of compatibility -- together worth 36 points -- using the Moon's sign and nakshatra in each chart.

• ✦Vashya (2 points) -- mutual attraction and influence.
• ✦Tara (3 points) -- health and well-being, from the distance between nakshatras.
• ✦Yoni (4 points) -- physical and intimate compatibility.
• ✦Graha Maitri (5 points) -- mental compatibility, from the friendship of the Moon-sign lords.
• ✦Gana (6 points) -- temperament: Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa.
• ✦Bhakoot (7 points) -- love, family welfare and prosperity, from the distance between Moon signs.
• ✦Nadi (8 points) -- health and progeny; the same Nadi in both charts scores zero.

Reading the total score

• ✦Below 18 -- traditionally not recommended without a detailed consultation.
• ✦18 to 24 -- average, acceptable match.
• ✦25 to 32 -- very good match.
• ✦33 to 36 -- excellent match.

Manglik Dosha

A chart is called Manglik when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. The result below checks this from both the Ascendant and the Moon for each person.

Traditions list many cancellation rules (for example, both partners being Manglik). This calculator does not apply them -- a Manglik result here is a prompt to consult an astrologer, not a verdict.

Accuracy

Positions are computed with the JPL DE421 ephemeris and the Lahiri ayanamsa, accurate to roughly an arcminute. A planet sitting within an arcminute of a sign or nakshatra boundary can land on the other side of it, so treat borderline results as a starting point for an astrologer, not a final word.
