Rahu and Ketu are the lunar nodes -- the two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's. They are always exactly opposite each other, so they always sit in opposite houses and form an axis in the chart.
Rahu shows where we crave growth and experience; Ketu shows where we already carry skill and are learning to let go.

Accuracy
This calculator uses the mean node, the traditional choice in Vedic astrology. Positions are computed with the JPL DE421 ephemeris and the Lahiri ayanamsa, accurate to roughly an arcminute. A planet sitting within an arcminute of a sign or nakshatra boundary can land on the other side of it, so treat borderline results as a starting point for an astrologer, not a final word.
